Let's talk about the Early Modern Sundanese language.

Early Modern Sundanese was the stage of Sundanese in the 19th century (c. 1800-1900) as the successor to Classical Sundanese (c. 1600-1800 C.E.). This period began during Dutch colonization, resulting in many Dutch vocabulary borrowed by Sundanese. During this period, the Sundanese language also began to use the Latin alphabet as a writing system with spelling adopted from Dutch spelling. It would later develop into Modern Sundanese in the early 20th century and after Indonesian independence

Two important figures in the modernization of the Sundanese language at that time were Karel Frederik Holle, a 19-century Dutch colonial administrator in the Dutch East Indies who paid great attention to the revival of the Sundanese language and made Sundanese the language of the nobilities in the Preanger Regencies Residency. The other one is Muhammad Musa, a native who was also a literary figure from the aristocracy as well as a pioneer of Sundanese printed literature.

The first modern textbook in Sundanese, Kitab Pangadjaran Basa Soenda (the Sundanese Language Textbook), was designed and printed in Holland in 1849 or 1850. As many as 1,490 copies of this 24-pages book were sent to the Dutch East Indies.

After that, Sundanese print literature developed rapidly, marked by the publication of teaching books for schools, such as Kitab Itoengan Pangmimitina Pisan/The very first Arithmetic book (1866), Wawatjan Pandji Woeloeng/The Tale of Panji Wulung (1876), and Dongeng-dongeng Pieunteungeun/Reflection Tales (1888).
