First make some wagon kits, but when made they need running to check that everything is in order.
I have 2 'roundy-roundy' layouts ready to run at the throwing of a switch., my garage out of bounds for me at the moment. So the small layout is pressed into service.
This had me thinking about how necessary it is to scale your locomotives and stock to fit the layout space you have available. This layout was built for small 0-4-0 locomotives pulling kit built stock carefully picked for their small size. The 4 small wagons are 'Chatham Kits' from Roxey Mouldings, although they are modelled on early LBSCR wagons they offer interesting uses.
At the back my latest 3 kit built wagons look way over scale, yet the short 12 ton van is just a very normal 12 ton 10 Foot wheelbase covered wagon. The longer LNER 20 ton bulk gran hoppers look massive, yet are based on a 10' 6" wheelbase. It truly highlights the need to balance scale sizes.
Two other things this little layout highlights is the stretching of the apparent size by having a train vanish from view for a few second, spoilt here by running those last wagons which made the train too long.
The other visual game was only adding a short section of fencing along the right front. Leaving the rest unfenced 'opens' up the scene. Had it been prototypically fenced all round it would have compacted and compressed the scene.
O.K not everyone will want a micro roundy-roundy and given the space I'd have liked to keep my big old layout, but it was no longer practical. Luckily I still can run long trains on the club's test track. Somewhere in my videos is one where I'm pulling 50+. A mixed diet is ideal !!
