Lentas is named after the greek word Leontas, as is next to the famous Cape Lion. According to the myth this cape was one of the two lions of the chariot of Rhea the mother of Zeus.
The ancient name of the city was Leben Λέβην which sounded Levin in greek.
Leben was one of the ports of the city of Gortys which was the capital of Crete during hellenistic and roman era.
Leben had one of the most important sanctuaries of Asclepius which was a world famous healing centre in antiquity, the philosopher and healer Apollonius of Tyana lived part of his life in Leben.
According to many scholars the origin of the word is from archaic doric greek for Lion. In archaic greek before prosody there was still used the letter Digamma "F" which was pronounced as V,U,F or W, in koine greek Lion is Leon Λέων, but the female form is Λέαινα Leaina, in more archaic greek where was not present the letters Ω omega and Η heta. We would have ΛΕFON with possible dialectal variant ΛΕFAN for ΛΕΩΝ Lion and ΛΕFANA, ΛΕFAιNA or ΛΕFAN for ΛΕΑΙΝΑ Lioness, from this archaic form ΛΕFAN pronounced Levan later with the adoption of the koine greek in hellenistic era instead of the local doric dialect as was common practice the letter A was substituted by letter H and instead of losing the Digamma which sounded as V in order to keep the phonetic value they probably used letter B instead. So according to this study from archaic ΛΕFAN (Lion,Lioness) (sounded Levan) the name change into ΛΕΒΗΝ (sounds Levin) in koine greek. The pronounce Leben come from the transcription from greek to Latin alphabet which kept the letter value and not the phonetic one, so ΛΕΒΗΝ was transcript LEBEN.
