Luna was separated from her herd during a routine evening migration
along the South Rim trails. Her fall onto the narrow ledge left her
stranded — unable to climb up or down — as temperatures dropped to
45°F overnight.

Without intervention, wildlife experts later confirmed Luna would
not have survived another 24 hours.

🧗 WHO IS TOM RIVERA?

Tom Rivera, 55, spent 30 years as a search-and-rescue specialist in
the Rocky Mountains before retiring to a life of camping and travel.
He was staying at Mather Point Campground when he heard Luna's cries.

"I couldn't leave her there," he said. "Simple as that."

🏥 LUNA'S RECOVERY

Luna was transported to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in
Flagstaff, Arizona, where Dr. Sarah Chen oversaw her three-week
recovery. She was dehydrated and weak, but suffered no broken bones.

Week 1: IV fluids, hand feeding, slow recovery
Week 2: Standing, eating independently, growing stronger
Week 3: Cleared for release — tracking collar fitted
