Castella de Aguada, popularly known as Bandra Fort, is a historic sea fort located at Bandra in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Built in 1640 by the Portuguese, the fort was strategically positioned at the southern tip of Salsette Island to guard the Mahim Bay and the Arabian Sea. The name “Castella de Aguada” means “Fort of the Waterpoint,” referring to a nearby freshwater spring that supplied water to passing ships.
Over time, the fort changed hands between the Portuguese and the British, eventually losing its military importance. Today, only portions of its laterite stone walls and bastions remain, but the site offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea and the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, it has become a popular tourist spot and a favorite location for photography and evening walks, blending colonial history with Mumbai’s modern skyline.
