Haji Ali Dargah is one of Mumbai’s most revered spiritual landmarks, located on a small islet off the coast of Worli in the Arabian Sea. Built in 1431, the shrine is dedicated to the Sufi saint Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, a wealthy merchant from Bukhara who renounced worldly life and devoted himself to spirituality.
The white marble structure, set against the vast sea, is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway that becomes accessible during low tide. The Indo-Islamic architecture, intricate jaali work, and serene ambiance attract thousands of devotees daily, regardless of religion.
Inside lies the saint’s tomb, draped in a red and green chadar, symbolizing devotion and faith. Beyond being a religious site, Haji Ali Dargah stands as a symbol of Mumbai’s syncretic culture, unity, and enduring Sufi traditions.
