1. Always be questioning
Swartz immersed himself in the study of computers, programming, the Internet, and Internet culture.

2. Confront your idea with real people
At age 13, Swartz won an ArsDigita Prize, given to young people who create "useful, educational, and collaborative" noncommercial websites.

3. Be excited about it
He joined the RDFCore working group at the World Wide Web Consortium where he authored RFC 3870.

4. The Internet provides opportunities
He was a major contributor to Markdown, a lightweight markup language for generating HTML, and author of its html2text translator.

5. Be careful when you change something
In 2008, he founded Watchdog.net, "the good government site with teeth," to aggregate and visualize data about politicians.

6. Everything is built on something else
In 2009, wanting to learn about effective activism, Swartz helped launch the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.

7. Learn from books
He was involved in the campaign to prevent passage of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

8. Fight for what you #believe in
Swartz was arrested near the Harvard campus by MIT police and a U.S. Secret Service agent on state breaking-and-entering charges.

9. Try to make the world a better place
Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz, he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment, where he had hanged himself.

10. #Believe that you can accomplish something
