Presented at the 19th Annual Salt Lake County Watershed Symposium, November 19-20, 2025. Keynote speaker Dr. Nalini Nadkarni presents, "Harnessing the Generative Power of Disturbance for Our Lives, Our Watersheds, and Our Planet".
Disturbances in the systems around us are increasing in frequency, intensity, and impact. As a forest ecologist, Dr. Nadkarni has gained many insights about the nature of disturbance and recovery from a scientific perspective. However, to broaden and deepen her understanding, she has invited input from a wide range of academic disciplines and societal sectors.
Dr. Nadkarni shares some emerging principles that transcend disciplines: to seek knowledge from diverse sources; to foster webs of relationships; and to be open to a “third state” that is neither the pre-disturbance state, nor the newly disturbed state, but something that differs from both. These precepts can lead us away from disabling despair, and move us toward hope and action.
By integrating these insights, we can reimagine the study and management of watersheds and other systems to better navigate change—and disturbance—across personal, social, and ecological domains.
