The Future of Resiliency is Equitable: Why Smart Strategies (and Love) are Critical for a Climate Resilient Food System.
Presented by: Tammara Soma, Director & Co-Founder, Food Systems Lab
Passé are the “bouncing back better” initiatives to promote “resiliency” that will simply lead us back to the status quo. Instead, the future of food systems resiliency is equitable. In this keynote, Dr. Tammara Soma shares major findings from her work as a member of the drafting team for the recently launched UN High Level Panel of Expert (HLPE-FSN), Building Resilient Food Systems report. She will also discuss her broader work at the Food Systems Lab, a lab that centers community-engaged research and social innovation principles to tackle wicked problems from farm, to table, to the bin, and beyond, even to outer space!
She comes to the table as a self-professed food system planner, a professor, a small-scale homesteader, a seed saver, a mother, and the associate director of SFU’s Global Institute of Agritech. She has dedicated her career to leveraging unheard voices, and identifying solutions to contribute toward a sustainable, equitable and climate resilient food systems. In this talk she warns against complacency and despair, amidst what some might feel like mounting “apocalyptic” conditions. From Indonesia and Tanzania to communities big and small across Canada, she will showcase worldviews, smart examples, and stories of hope and love for a more equitable and just food future.
