Whether its casual T-shirt and jeans, a day in the office or nipping down the pub for a swift one, you will need an inoffensive everyday fragrance in your collection. But which ones? This time I'm ranting about my 'Top Five Men's Everyday Fragrances in 2018'!
At number five, is a fragrance that created quite a stir before its release earlier this year in 2018. Fans of this house were predicting a concoction of such power and extravagance you'd think the 80's were coming back! When that fragrance was released it shocked many fans, because what they had created was a mainstream, easy to wear, mass appeal fragrance. And that fragrance is...Alien Man by Mugler!
Now, Alien Man is a fragrance that you have to wear to appreciate. It's classed as a woody oriental but has a big hit of aromatics in there. On opening, there's a citrus burst and an odd choice for a fragrance ingredient and that's dill, although the citrus and dill quickly mix with anise and lavender to become a fresh, green herbal accord.
Now, this is a fragrance that plays a mid to... long...'ish' game, you've got to give it some time as the dry down is what Alien Man is all about! Those fresh, sharp, top notes quickly slip into the smokey, floral, leather and woods at the heart of this fragrance. There's a musky, almost animalistic wood note that I can't stop smelling in the heart which is coming from cashmeran. It's reinforced with a smokey beech wood, now this in turn is sweetened by the white, slightly fruity, floral of osmanthus. The base is a warm white amber with a twist of vanilla.
The silage of Alien Man is moderate and the longevity...look, the show seems to be over in about four hours or so on me, everything seems to fade quite fast quickly becoming a skin scent. But don't make the mistake of thinking that it doesn't seem to hang around for long because after wearing it, eight to twelve hours later, that intimate skin scent is still there!
At number 4 is another fragrance released this year in 2018 and it is the Coach Platinum.
On first spray, it opens with a cool black pepper note combined with a woody, fresh and crisp juniper. There's also the slight, fruity hint of pineapple in there that adds some sweetness. As it starts to dry down it becomes more aromatic with sage, geranium and again we've got cashmeran. This time around though, the cashmeran is more woodsy without that musky, animalistic smell of the Alien Man. In the base, you've got patchouli, a smooth leather, a generous helping of vanilla and one of my favourite wood notes, sandalwood.
At number 3 its the Acqua di Gio Absolu.
When you first spray there's a fresh surge of sea notes and salt with a citrus tang from bergamot, grapefruit and lemon. Now, there's apple and pear in here that mellow and sweeten the opening and introduce the aromatics in the heart. In the heart you get the rosemary from the original Acqua di Gio DNA along with geranium and lavender.
After the abrupt and sweet opening and the sharp aromatics in the heart, the base of the Absolu is woody and earthy from patchouli, tonka bean and woody notes. Labdanum adds a touch of leather and amberwood amplifies the base. Again ingredients that are quite common in other fragrances, amberwood particularly is being used more frequently due to it's ability to increase the power, longevity and intensity of a fragrance. Unsurprisingly the silage and longevity of the Acqua di Gio Absolu...on my skin...is moderate to good.
At number 2 is the Yves Saint Laurent 'Y' for Men EDT.
On opening it's sharp and cool. What I'm smelling is at odds with the notes I've seen listed. There's a tingle of ginger, bergamot flashes by before the floral, soapy aldehydes take control. It really is clean and crisp in the top.
As it starts to dry down the heart is floral and aromatic with geranium, I'm also getting a touch of lavender and a slight metallic tang of violet leaf. There's a fruity sweetness to the heart as well with apple and I can pick out just a hint of mint and sage.
As the dry down continues things start to warm up again with incense, musk, fir balsam and cedar. There's also an ambroxide in there. It's not aggressive, but it is noticeable.
So at number 1. A fragrance that embodies cool, clean, elegant sophistication yet has the versatility for formal and casual wear ...it's Tom Ford Grey Vetiver.
This fragrance opens with a sharp grapefruit note, the perfect accompaniment to vetiver. You see, nootkatone, the organic compound that makes grapefruit smell of 'grapefruit', is also found in vetiver. Next we've got a clean, slightly sweet orange blossom and more freshness with a touch of pepper from sage.
In the heart is nutmeg adding an earthy spice, with orris root that brings smooth powder and pimento to give just a touch of heat.
In the base is vetiver supported by woods, amber and oakmoss.
Silage and projection on the Grey Vetiver is very excellent. I get a good eight hours wear from this.
