In this game with a very poor English language, Mario must fight against opponents that are other main family basic sprites such as Penpen, a fireball, a fighterfly, a sidestepper and the Kamegon, that in this game appears every 5 levels and it is represented by a shellcreeper. The story is that Mario must save the princess (Lady), but everytime he rescues her, they kidnap her again, so it’s a story that keeps going forever until you lose a battle.
Your main character looks like Mario in defend mode, but if you press A, Mario turns into Luigi in attack mode and everytime you defeat the opponent, you don’t just advance to the next level, but you get a bonus of 40 extra vitality pts for the next round.
You have two kind of helps in case you need them, such as the fireballs that you can shoot (by pressing B) if your opponent is below 50 life pts or the SWAP PORTION (that must be “potion” but it’s a detail) that swaps each other’s life pts once prossen SELECT or START (oh, that’s right.. PRESSED. I forgot it’s a regular verb.. this poor English is also affecting my grammar). If you have no more Swap Po(r)tions left, SELECT and START keys act as B button, meaning that Mario shoots fire balls. If you have no more swap po(r)tions and fireballs, you’re done for, since you do not have any chance to go further and foes may kill you soon, so what I suggest, is to use your helps more wisely.
Everytime you begin a new level, a random item (that could be helpful or a penalty) is randomly given to you depending on your luck.
Helpful items are:
1) SWAP PORTION = As I said before, it swaps each other’s amount of vitality once used
2) FIRE BALL = Use it to cause more damage to your opponent, but only if you have low vitality and your opponent is below 50 vitality pts
3) SHIELD = Enemy attacks are weakened
4) BLUE PORTION = You start the battle with more vitality than your current one
5) SUPER SWORD = Your attacks are more powerful than those of your opponent
6) RED RING = Opponents cannot hurt you.
Penalizing items are:
1) DEATH PORTION = You begin the battle with the opponent with more vitality than your current amount
2) RED PORTION = you start the battle with less vitality than your current amount
3) NO ITEM = You won’t get any help or penalty
4) SHAM SWORD = your attacks are weakened
Let me give you an advice once your random level item is the RED RING: Since you lose vitality even by holding B button for too long, don’t use attack mode while fighting enemys, but let them go towards you and wait until it dies, so you won’t lose any vitality during the battle.
… Ah, eneMIES?? Ok, sorry, it’s the game’s fault =D thanks for correcting me.
Fun fuct: as usual, every Family Basic available ROM is slightly modified and two differences I noticed after seeing how does the pure original game look like are:
1) MONSETR DECIDE = In the original game, this text is written correctly, dunno why letters T and E were swapped once dumped it;
2) The music after saving Lady.. it comes from the Namco’s Tower Of Druaga (like many other music tracks of this game, borrowed from several Namco games such as Dig Dug, Tower Of Druaga and Dragon Buster). It was perfectly composed for this game, but its dump has garbled it.
