In today's video, we take an in-depth look at one of history's more obscure aircraft, but one that demonstrated a pivotal moment in the recovery of Japan in the wake of World War II, this coming to pass as the NAMC YS-11, as developed by a conglomerate of seven of Japan's leading aircraft and manufacturing firms, and took a leaf from the book of the Vickers Viscount to create a simple but sturdy turboprop airliner.

What resulted was an unexpected success for the fledging Japanese aviation industry, with the YS-11 being able to garner success in the United States where many other major foreign builders couldn't when Piedmont Airlines procured a clutch during the late 1960s, though the inexperience of the Japanese aircraft industry would prove to be costly, as the project incurred a significant loss due to mismanagement and a failure to apportion responsibility among the founding firms at Namco, leading to the YS-11 being so far the only post-war Japanese commercial airliner to see widespread use.
