We should start by noting that this week's episode of The Big 3 was recorded prior to President Trump's meeting with China leader Xi Jinping.
First up: China. CPA economist Andrew Rechenberg welcomes Trade Counsel Charles Benoit to kick things off by roasting the China “Phase One” deal—which, as they remind us, China missed by about forty percent. We’re shocked they didn’t live up to their commitments, because nothing says “trustworthy partner” like the country that built its economy by reverse-engineering your iPhone and selling it back to you cheaper. Maybe instead of begging China to buy our stuff, we should just make more of our own — you know, like a country that remembers it’s supposed to be good at making things.
Then there’s medicine. Other nations get our drugs for pennies while Americans pay the price of a used Honda for a bottle of pills — because we subsidize global R&D and get none of the discounts. It’s like we invented penicillin and then agreed to rent it from Canada.
Finally, new trade deals in Asia. Better than the old ones, but still designed by Boeing and friends — the same folks who brought us “planes that fall apart.” So yes, progress! But until tariffs mean something and enforcement has teeth, well, we'll have to wait and see.
