• The Jehovah witnesses will tell you He is not a person
• They believe He is a force or power (Romans 8 and Ephesians 4)

If you do not believe He is a person
• You will never develop a personal relationship with Him!
• You do not develop a personal relationship with a thing or an object

I think we have difficulty with this because of His name.
• It’s easy for us to relate to the Father as a person and to the Son Jesus.
• It’s hard for us to relate to His name: The Holy Spirit

I think it would have been better if He had a name like Bill.
• “I’m going to talk to the Father, Jesus and Bill!”
• The formal Churches could call Him William. (Wild Billy)

It just doesn’t sound the same when we say,
• “God the Father, God the Son, and God Bill!”
• The Holy Spirit describes His function

God, the Father is His description. God, the Son is His description.
• God, the Holy spirit is His description and function
• His name is God!
• God has a mind, a will and emotions!

Matthew 12:18
• We feel with our emotions.
• And we desire with our wills.

Matthew 26:38
Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.”

Hebrews 10:38

Because the Holy Spirit is a person,
• He has a soul: a mind, a will and emotions.

We have someone living inside of us who has and knows the mind of God
• He has and knows the will of God
• And He has and knows the feelings of God

1. He has a mind.

John 16:13

He will guide us into all truth.
• How can He guide you into all truth unless He KNOWS all truth?

How intelligent is the Holy Spirit? What is God’s IQ?
• Albert Einstein had an IQ of 209.
• That’s just a little above mine.
• IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient

You have Someone living in you that knows everything that there is to know
about everything, and He has committed Himself to be your teacher.
Since you have Someone living in you that knows everything and
• Has committed to be your teacher,
• Why don’t you ask Him some questions?

I remember one time studying a passage and I couldn’t figure it out
• The Holy Spirit said, “Do you think I know what it means?”
• “Why don’t you just ask me” and the answer came immediately!

2. He has a will.
Acts 16:6
They were forbidden by the Holy Spirit. He exerted His will!
• I’m showing you the advantages to the Holy Spirit being a person!

Since He has a will and obviously His will is the will of God,
• Why not get to know Him so you can know God’s will for your life?
• The Bible tells us the general will of God for our lives

Romans 8:28
Romans 8:26-27

He will never disagree with the General will of God
• He will never contradict the Scripture!
• The Holy Spirit is God so He can’t contradict Himself!

• On the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came
• Peter said, “This is what was spoken of in the prophet Joel!”
I’m going to pour my Spirit out on all flesh (everyone)!

Your sons and your daughters are going to prophesy
• How can you prophesy unless the Holy Spirit speaks to you?
• Your young men shall see visions

And your old men shall dream dreams
• By the way, I’m still seeing visions!
• Everyone can hear God now!

You can have a personal relationship with God now!
• I can hear God WITH you but not FOR you!
• God came so He could have a personal relationship with you!

You can’t have a personal relationship with someone through someone else.
• “Will you ask my wife where she wants to go on vacation?”
• “Will you ask my wife how many children she wants us to have?”

Will you ask God what His will is for my life? No! You ask Him!
• Can you get a word for me?
• Yes, tell him I want to talk to him personally!

3. He has emotions.
Galatians 5:22-23

These are all characteristics of a person not a thing.
• A tree can’t have joy and be kind!
• A person exhibits kindness and self-control.
Ephesians 4:30
Ephesians 4:25-32

Lying, anger, giving place to the devil, stealing, not working,
• Not giving, not edifying, bitterness, wrath, anger,
• Clamor, malice and evil speaking grieve the Holy Spirit!

If you want to see what grieves the Holy Spirit, it’s sin!
• Sin grieves the Holy Spirit.
• His first name is Holy!

If you want to grieve the Holy Spirit,
• Start talking about people and mistreating them,
• And allow sin to stay in your life.

We need to understand that sin grieves Him
• Because sin hurts us and He loves us.
• He’s not a prude that doesn’t want us to have any fun!

He cares about you and
• He wants you to have a great life but sin will destroy it.
• Sin will destroy you and your family

I asked God to be able to hear Him better as a gift for my 30th birthday
• And He dealt with a sin issue in my life.
• My sin was grieving Him and hindering me from hearing Him
