Soft wind in the African savanna

The soundscape is understandably thin given the scorching heat. Occasionally a bird will chirp or fly by. Flies and other insects can also be heard but not very frequently. Everyone and everything seems to be taking a break from life until the temperature becomes bearable again.

Sound recording is challenging in this landscape. Tall grasses move in the wind and create a continuous background noise that can be easily mistaken for equipment hiss. Placing the microphones is tricky too - dry grass moving and hitting the tripod can sound pretty bad. The wind itself can cause problems as gusts hit the mics. Not to mention that such a subtle soundscape can very easily be ruined by distant vehicles or other man-made noise.

Defying all these challenges, I was able to record a few hours of clean savanna sounds in Kenya a few years ago. It's by no means the most interesting or varied of my recordings, but it's a lovely reminder that life doesn't have to be hectic or overbearing to be enjoyable. Sometimes you need to slow down and notice beauty in tiny detail.
