Timeline: On June 29, 2025, Hernandez entered a med spa in Bakersfield, California, around 2 p.m. for a procedure. She remained inside for approximately two to two and a half hours, socializing with staff even after her procedure was finished.
The Scene: The two children, ages 1 and 2, were left strapped in their car seats in her Toyota Corolla in an outdoor parking lot. The outside temperature reached 101°F (38°C) that day. While Hernandez's defense claims she left the car running with the air conditioner on, the vehicle's automatic shut-off feature turned the engine and AC off after about an hour. The internal temperature of the car was estimated to have reached as high as 116°F (46°C) or even 143°F (62°C) without the AC running.
Tragic Outcome: When Hernandez returned to the car around 4:30 p.m., Amillio was unresponsive, with a body temperature of 107.2°F, and later died at the hospital. His 2-year-old brother survived but was found with a temperature of 99°F and was placed in protective custody.
Prior Warnings: Text messages and testimony revealed that spa employees had told Hernandez she could bring her children into the waiting room, but she chose to leave them in the car anyway.
Legal Proceedings: Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder but has admitted to charges of manslaughter and child cruelty.
