A Legendary Appears... You Can't Escape!

Описание: 📖There was a deafening silence between us as my brother finished his story with a shrug. Eyes wide open and dry from staring into the fire too long.

“Okay, okay… enough with the depressing encounters,” Miss said. “Goodness, you two have been through the wringer.”

“You’re one to talk.” My brother spat and then caught himself. “Sorry, still reeling myself in from the previous story.”

“No, no, that’s okay. You’re right. But I hope you know there is a difference between a mentor pushing you and evil. When you dedicate yourself to saving others, you’ll see plenty of evil. It stares back, doing everything it can to break you.”

“We know what we signed up for… but still, we said the words, thought we understood, but we don’t. With every fight, we learn more and more about how evil the world can truly be,” my brother said, forcing a smirk and turning his head away.

“However,” I interjected. “With enough determination, we’ll defeat it, one by one, and spread the seeds of joy to sprout once again.”

“Yeah, it feels good knowing that he’s now behind bars.” My brother wrung his hands together, staring deep into the fire. The memories replaying and festering within his mind.

Miss clapped to snap him out of the trance. “How about you recount something fun?”

“Those are far and few in between, but…” I grinned, elbowing my brother. “We should tell her about Humdrum.”

“Humdrum?” she asked.

That got him to smile, even if it was slight.

“It’s a creature we met. After the whole debacle with the last quest giver and those tree creatures, we felt it was only appropriate for us to check if there were any suspicious quests in the next town. Lo and behold, there was one to capture a legendary creature and bring back its head. Apparently, it was terrorizing the town.”

“Was anyone hurt?”

“You would think that with the amount of gold they posted as a reward that this horrid beast destroyed half the town. But no… it came swiftly, attacked one person for a couple seconds, and then left. The memory of the encounter, however, stayed with those victims. They said this creature with a giant moon eye, two long white horns, and a Cheshire grin would haunt their dreams. Tossing them around, slobbering on them, and forcing them into a trance with its enormous moon eye.”

“No one ever elaborated on what the trance meant.”

“That’s true, we probably should’ve asked more questions about that. Anyway, getting back on track, the victims would wake up in a fright covered in what they claimed was slobber.”

“Definitely not their own sweat.” He rolled his eyes, reaching into his satchel for a piece of meat to roast over the fire.

“Moon eye, horns… I’ve heard of a mystical creature like that before… more of a legend. And you believed these people?”

“There were multiple accounts. If we didn’t investigate what was going on, someone else might’ve gone in our stead and reacted poorly.”

“That’s fair. Go on, tell me about this Humdrum,” she said, leaning in.

“Well, that’s what we just call it. Moon Eye just seemed disrespectful.” I laughed. “We went into the forest, expecting to be there a long time. People searched before, but that seemed to be the tactic to get Humdrum to leave you alone. Search and you’ll never find it. Leave it be and it will find you, haunting you forever after a single encounter.”

“And us? We take two steps into that forest. There was no sound of wildlife or insects. The air started twisting and rising upward. A glowing eye appeared out of nowhere, watching us from the darkness. A sudden encounter with a legendary creature that others only dream of.”

“We were totally out of our league.”📖
