On December 30, 1975, the Music Academy witnessed K.V. Narayanaswamy in sublime form — his music, marked by grace, clarity, and quiet strength, evoked the contemplative grandeur of Muthuswamy Dikshitar’s art.
With his characteristic balance of intellect and restraint, KVN approached Dikshitar’s compositions not as showpieces of virtuosity but as meditations in sound — each kriti unfurling with the dignity of temple architecture and the quiet glow of devotion.
Through ragas like Begada, Kalyani, and Bhairavi, he revealed the structural and lyrical brilliance of Dikshitar’s works, his voice tracing the contours of the sahitya with reverence and lucidity. The concert’s centrepiece — “Balagopala” in Bhairavi — stood as a testament to KVN’s ability to merge sruthi suddham with spiritual depth, his singing at once austere and profoundly moving.
Accompanied by masters whose artistry matched his subtlety, this 1975 recital remains a benchmark of aesthetic purity and classical refinement. As we mark his birth anniversary on November 15, we remember KVN not only as a torchbearer of the Ariyakudi school but as a musician who gave new life to the timeless serenity of Dikshitar’s music — where bhakti met beauty, and restraint became transcendence.
