@raymondcarrickclevelandwayfare This is first of a series of videos featuring some of the walks I did during my childhood and teenage years in Shildon, County Durham and are all connected in some way, to the railways.
Shildon was a key part of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, the world’s first public passenger railway. Its growth is inseparable from the rise of the East Durham coalfields in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, which created the demand for efficient transport links.
This is a personal journey, reflecting some of the changes I have seen over the last 65 years.
In this first video, one of the newer developments, the Locomotion Railway Museum, is our first port of call. Then a visit to Shildon Railway Station, how it is now and how it was 60 years ago.
All the walks in the series start from the Locomotion museum car park and will reflect the railway heritage of Shildon and my personal memories of how it used to be.
