Along the early Blue Mountains railway line, small sandstone cottages once stood beside level crossings, home to the gatekeepers who controlled the movement of road traffic across the tracks. Built during the 1860s as part of the first railway over the mountains engineered by John Whitton, these cottages formed an essential part of the railway’s operation. In this video we explore the surviving gatekeeper’s cottages, stories around them and the families who lived and worked beside the railway.
