What are the symptoms of PCO and what is its fate?
Polycystic ovary is a very common term in recent days. Today we are going to discuss about the symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome and its prognosis.
Poly means multiple, cyst means pouch filled with water like fluid, and you all know the meaning of ovary. When multiple tiny pouches, filled with water like fluid seen in ovary, then it's called polycystic ovary.
There are different symptoms, which should be present before we diagnose Polycystic ovarian syndrome, besides ultrasonography. Irregular or sometimes no period without hormonal medicines is most common amongst all. Sometimes androgen level of body got increased, which results in oily skin followed by acne / pimples. Hair loss also increases due to androgen surplus. PCO also affects the fertility process of woman and it may be difficult for them to get pregnancy. PCO has a big impact on mental health as well and may cause severe anxiety as well as depression. Polycystic ovary occurs due to hormonal dysfunction and therefore cannot be reverted with a short course of treatment. But treatment can control the symptoms though it may not cure the condition.
Let us discuss, how polycystic ovary results – at the time of ovulation ovum gets maturity inside a fluid filled pouch and gets released after maturity. In some cases ovulation does not take place in right time due to hormonal imbalance, ovum stuck inside the pouch and not able to come out. These pouches get accumulated one after another in each cycle and they form a peripheral rim of small cysts in the ovary which can be seen on ultrasonography as polycystic ovary and the hormonal dysfunction is termed as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). But this type of ultrasonographic feature may be normal before 20 years of age, so they should not be marked as PCOS patients. But if it happens after the age of 20 and other symptoms are affecting their regular life, then you must visit a Gynaecologist for further assessment. But hypo / hyper thyroid, hyperprolactinemia and excessive body weight also can cause ovulatory dysfunction, they need to be corrected as well if required.
The parents of an adolescent female often are very worried regarding PCO as they worry about their child's fertility potential. But, all types of PCO do not hamper the fertility life. Polycystic ovary sometimes gets corrected automatically with the age. If not, then there are some medicines available which can help them to get pregnant with PCO. PCO cannot be cured totally but can be controlled with some medication and life style modification. Just one should keep in mind that one may need to regularise her periods by medicines, as less frequent period (Less-than 4 in 1 year) may lead to endometrial cancer. Maintenance of a healthy weight in PCO with proper diet and exercise is very much helpful.
Please remember, PCOS is a hormonal dysfunction where ovulation does not occur in time and there is androgen excess. Some lifestyle modification and awareness can control the problem if tried whole heartedly.
