In this follow-up video on journaling for writers, I share simple, practical examples of how I use a writer’s journal to track progress, plan writing sessions, and set achievable daily goals.
You’ll see exactly how to structure your entries using three short paragraphs—what you did, what you will do, and today’s goals—so you can build confidence, clarity, and momentum in your writing practice.
Here is my three short paragraph journal entry example:
I have: Written (usually freewriting) for ten minutes uninterrupted. Reviewed my novel and four short stories for two minutes each, and those that caught my attention I worked on for an hour and fifteen minutes (my novel and two short stories). Sat in silence for two separate five-minute sessions and filled out four story ideas on index cards.
I will: Free-write for ten minutes. Review my novel and short stories for two minutes each and work on those that catch my attention. Sit in silence for at least one five-minute session to ponder new story ideas. Sit in silence for at least one five-minute session to ponder current story ideas on my index cards.
Today’s goals: Finish boat scene for novel. Sketch out two middle scenes for one short story.
