Dr. Kefilwe Selema, President – Botswana Doctors Union (BDU)
Botswana Doctors Union Announces Action on Emergency Call System, On April 6,2025, the Botswana Doctors Union (BDU) released a press statement outlining its firm stance on the country’s emergency call system, following the government’s lack of response to a 72-hour ultimatum issued on April 3, 2025.
BDU President Dr. Kefilwe Selema expressed deep concern over the ongoing failure by authorities to address critical issues faced by doctors, particularly regarding emergency call duties. In response, the union has implemented a decisive policy: effected April 7, 2025, each doctor will only be permitted to undertake one emergency call per month, limited to a 24-hour period.
The union further emphasized that overtime will no longer be used as a solution to fill emergency call gaps, and under no circumstances should any doctor be overburdened. Dr. Selema also raised serious concerns about the exploitation of foreign doctors in the system, calling on foreign embassies to safeguard their nationals who may be subjected to coercive labor practices under the threat of contract termination.
The BDU reiterated its call for immediate government intervention and cooperation, while also appealing for public understanding during this time. The union remains committed to finding long-term, sustainable solutions that respect the dignity, safety, and rights of all healthcare workers in Botswana.
