Pelotshweu Baeng Defends BDP, Criticizes UDC and Foreign Investment Models at BOFEPUSU Town Hall
At a heated town hall discussion hosted by BOFEPUSU in Gaborone, Pelotshweu Baeng, a representative of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), delivered a passionate defense of his party’s legacy while openly criticizing both the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and the country’s current foreign investment policies.
Baeng began by acknowledging unemployment as one of the country’s biggest challenges but said it was important to view the issue in context.
“The BDP failed to curb unemployment in this country because it took power when Botswana had nothing. Most of our focus was on infrastructure development and eradicating poverty,” Baeng stated.
He argued that the BDP laid the foundation for Botswana’s development through massive investments in public infrastructure and social welfare. However, he accused the UDC government of failing to build on that legacy.
“We are yet to see any concrete action from the UDC government in creating sustainable employment. What jobs have they created? What policies have they implemented to address this crisis?”
But perhaps the most pointed part of Baeng’s address was his criticism of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Botswana. He said that while the country continues to attract international investors, the benefits are not trickling down to ordinary Batswana.
“We continue to boast about foreign investment, but how much of that money is actually improving the lives of our people?” Baeng questioned.
“We must stop being satisfied with just headlines about billions in investment—those billions must create jobs for our people and empower local businesses.”
He emphasized the need for investment policies that prioritize skills transfer, local ownership, and job creation for citizens. Baeng also challenged the government to ensure that investors don’t just extract wealth from Botswana but reinvest it into communities and the economy at large.
The town hall was attended by key stakeholders from political parties, labour unions, and civil society. Baeng’s comments sparked sharp reactions and discussions about the long-term impacts of economic policy decisions on ordinary citizens.
