In this video, I share some tips on how to overcome mental blocks that may be holding you back from achieving your goals. The thing is, feeling fear is a common problem for many aspiring writers and freelancers and it’s often one of the biggest obstacles to success. But by identifying what it is that you’re really afraid of, you can move forward.
When you aren’t making progress toward your goals, it’s easy to tell yourself that you’re just not good enough. However, that’s often not the real problem.
A good analogy is swimming upstream. When you’re swimming upstream, it may be natural to think that you’re just not a good swimmer. But, of course, the real problem is that there’s something holding you back.
When it comes to your writing goals, something very similar often takes place. You may feel like you're not making any progress due to a lack of talent when really it’s the fact that you’re feeling fear that's stopping you.
One way I’ve learned how to overcome mental blocks is through something I call an ecology check. This is where I ask a series of questions about where you want to be in the future and how your life will be different because of it. Often, through this exercise, it becomes clear that there are fears that have gone unrecognized for some time.
For example, the very thing that’s holding you back could be the fear of achieving your goals. If getting published means spending less time with your family, for example, it may deter you from fully embracing that path.
Only by identifying why you’re feeling fear will you be able to release that fear and make progress. Once you learn how to overcome mental blocks, your journey will be much easier.
