The IBON Foundation says the government should think of better ways to generate more high-quality jobs for Filipinos instead of relying on foreign investments in addressing economic woes.
"If you're going to leave it to the market, which is the default mode of the government, it is not learning from our negative experience. Even worse, it's not learning from the positive experience of our Asian neighbors," IBON Foundation president Sonny Africa says.
Unemployment eased to 5.2% in July but the quality of jobs worsened as the underemployment rate rose to 13.8%, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. This means that 6.5 million Filipinos were seeking additional job opportunities.
