Performed on March 13, 2025 in Recital Hall, a historic performance space at the Jacobs School of Music.
This piece was composed by Mitushiro Nagano in 1989 for euphonium and audio accompaniment. Nagano describes this piece as a work of "environmental music" and is designed to be "soothing music for the home and workplace".
"Matrix" has three movements that are performed straight through in a fast-slow-fast format. The first movement is built around a rhythmic flute ostinato, a rhythmic point of origin referred to as a "matrix". In the second movement, the piece transitions into a free section that completely removes the rhythmic verve of the first movement. Following this is the concluding movement, which finds a new "matrix" at a more relaxed tempo. This movement builds to a powerful conclusion in which the solo euphonium line builds in intensity and complexity. The accompaniment Nagano provides for the euphoniumist is built from sample-based synthesizers that imitate acoustic instruments, including flutes, drums, and voices among others.
