Martin Ellerby's Euphonium Concerto, commissioned by and dedicated to Steven Mead, has been a staple of the euphonium repertoire since its premiere in 1997. It's notable for its unique blend of melodic writing and rhythmic dynamism as well as its considerable difficulty for the euphoniumist. The soloist must master angular rhythms and complex finger combinations while demonstrating a command of the full tessitura of the instrument. With that said, these challenges are worth mastering to bring out the full expressive range of Ellerby's writing.
"III. Rhapsody (for Luis)" is the third movement of the concerto and is dedicated to the late euphoniumist and teacher Luis Maldonado. Ellerby employs large leaps throughout, making use of the euphonium's high tessitura. It is a significant piece of lyrical writing for the euphonium, notable for its build-up to d'' (high D) that is the climax of the concerto. The tonal ambiguity Ellerby employed throughout the concerto is used to more warm and gentle ends here.
