In this episode, I take you inside a real cross country training session as I coach Dan through his first winter workout on grass and mud in cross country spikes. As a former sub-elite runner of 15 years now transitioning into a full-time running coach, this channel documents my journey from elite athlete to coaching beginner runners, young athletes, and competitive track runners — while I continue to train and race myself.
In this run vlog, I break down exactly what cross country racing and training is, and why you must build running strength before jumping straight into spikes. Cross country shoes are lightweight and unsupportive, and when combined with uneven terrain, mud, hills, and cold conditions, they demand serious strength and conditioning.
Throughout the session, I explain the huge benefits of cross country training for 5K runners, 10K runners, track athletes, road runners, and even parkrun athletes:
• Strength & Conditioning – Develop muscular strength, balance, coordination, and neuromuscular adaptations you simply don’t get on the road.
• Aerobic Endurance – Constant pace changes and uneven terrain build real endurance strength and improve race fitness.
• Mental Toughness – Cold, hard, uncomfortable conditions forge resilience that makes track and road racing feel easier.
We finish with a post-session reflection and I share how a strong winter of cross country in 2019 led to my 5000m PB the following summer.
