The most popular hike in Harpers Ferry National Historic Park is the Maryland Heights Trail. From the banks of the Potomac River, it's a short but steep hike to the top of the rocky cliffs that tower more than 300 feet above Harpers Ferry, giving adventurous folks a bird's eye view of Lower Town. The park itself spans three states: West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland with Maryland Heights being on the Maryland side of the Potomac River.
We began our hike on the West Virginia side of the river, but to avoid any parking issues in Lower Town we parked a couple miles up the road at the park visitor center. There's plenty of parking here but there is a $20 per vehicle entrance fee that is good for three days. The park provides a free shuttle service, that runs every 10-15 minutes, from the visitor center to Lower Town. If you choose to park at the train station in Lower Town, you still need the pay the $20 entrance fee.
From the shuttle drop-off point in Lower Town, it's a short walk down Shenandoah Street to The Point, at the confluence of Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Cross a foot bridge over the Potomac River into Maryland, turn left onto the C&O Canal Path and walk along the river. Then turn right and cross a small foot bridge over the canal, cross the road and begin the climb up the Maryland Heights trail.
