In 1862, Murphy-Chambers Farm was the site of a historic civil war battle that saw Harpers Ferry fall to the Confederate Army. Union soldiers forced the original owner, Edmund Chambers from his home and set up a position here. But Confederate soldiers would defy all odds dragging heavy cannons up the ravine and launch a surprise attack on the Union forces to win the battle for Harpers Ferry. It was the largest surrender of US troops during the Civil War.
