The Sapporo Snow Festival is one of the largest winter events in Hokkaido, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each day. I’m not very comfortable with crowds, so on this particular night — unable to sleep — I decided to go for a walk long after most people had gone home.

The lights were turned off, the crowds had disappeared, and heavy snow had fallen throughout the evening. Snow quietly covered the giant sculptures, and fresh snow softened every step beneath my feet. What is usually loud and lively felt completely different at 2AM — calm, empty, and almost surreal.
