Bulk buying⬇️
If you want to save money on groceries, bulk buying goods is a great way to do so! One part of homesteading to me is having a rotating food storage and ingredients on hand when I need them. Bulk buying and having a variety of food preservation methods is what makes it work!
I buy beans in bulk. I can them to have ready for recipes but I also dry store them by vacuum sealing like you see here or in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. I do a mixture because I like to soak and sprout my beans when I’m cooking in the kitchen. Sometimes I’ll used canned beans for recipes too. Just depends! Food storage gives you the option.
Now that I have my own supply of honey, I am not storing sugar as much, but I used to! I am currently rotating through the last of my stores. I would get it in bulk, out in a 5 gallon bucket with a gamma lid and grab when I needed! Now, I am transitioning to honey (which lasts forever!)
I buy salt (and all other spices!) in bulk. It’s nice to have what you need on hand. I store in vacuum sealed jars in my pantry for ease of grabbing when I need them.
Flour…honestly, if you want it in your pantry and never have to worry about your food storage, wheat berries and a wheat milk are THE WAY to go. Not only does this preserve nutrients but wheat berries last way longer when stored properly as compared to flour six months vs thirty years long….
Yeast! I love to have yeast on hand for breads in a pinch. I vacuum seal the jars and then store in the freezer and grab a jar when I run out of my previous one then store in the fridge.
These dry goods were emptied from the shelves a few years ago during the food shortages. I learned my lesson then and keep my own grocery store at home with bulk buying and food perseveration!
Vacuum sealers are easy to use and allow you store pantry goods, refrigerated goods, and freezer goods and keep fresher longer. I vacuum seal veggies and fruits in my fridge and when I tell you it extends the shelf life…it does! Instead of berries going bad in a few days, try a few weeks! It’s that noticeable.
Freezing is great for food storage too.
