Hi everyone, my name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
Today I am talking about puppy baby teeth or deciduous teeth. Deciduous teeth in dogs sometimes do not fall out of the mouth. A dog's baby teeth or deciduous teeth should be worked out of the mouth as the adult teeth rupture through gums.
Once the adult teeth rupture through the gums, the baby teeth should be loose and fall from the mouth naturally. However, sometimes the baby teeth do not naturally fall from the puppy's mouth. Retained puppy teeth are very common. On a regular basis I see retained deciduous teeth in dog's of all ages with small or toy breeds dogs being more common to have retained puppy baby teeth.
If the baby puppy teeth do not naturally fall out of the mouth, they can cause damage to the adult teeth. The retained puppy teeth can cause poor alignment of the adult teeth and additional tartar and calculus development. For this reason, I always recommended having the retained deciduous teeth being remove or extracted. A puppy or any dog with retained puppy baby teeth will need to go under anesthesia to have the teeth removed. The roots on the puppy tooth is very long, so the dog will need anesthesia with a local pain pain injection to prevent pain. Most veterinarians will send home medications for inflammation and pain.
