July 4, 2018, a 62-year-old hiker fell 100 feet down a cliff face on Obstruction Island in the Pacific Northwest. Departing Air Station Port Angeles in limited visibility, the crew of CGNR 6596 navigated the San Juan Islands under total darkness, arriving on scene to find local EMS tending to the survivor.
The extent of the survivor’s injuries left her unable to breathe on her own and continuous manual breathing was required until she could reach a hospital. This rarely used and never trained maneuver would allow the crew's rescue swimmer and the survivor to be hoisted into the aircraft simultaneously, facilitating manual breathing for the patient during the hoist.
