The Coast Guard Foundation selected Aviation Survival Technician Second Class Darren Harrity to receive the Admiral Chester R. Bender Award for Heroism at this year’s Pacific Area Awards Dinner in San Francisco on Friday, September 23, 2016.
Petty Officer Harrity towed four survivors, who were all wearing full survival suits, one-by-one in 48-degree water through choppy waves and pitch darkness; completing the equivalent of an Olympic-length triathlon swim during the rescue.
