“One of the things that we did when we first purchased this home was we made sure that insulation was top notch.” She also had a smart thermostat installed in her home. “If you have a smart phone, you pair it with your phone, and you can control your temperature anywhere you are in the world, as long as you have Wi-Fi.”

Another power saving move she mentions, is getting double sided curtains for her glass sliding doors. They block out the cold and trap in the heat. She also talkies about making sure doors and windows stay closed in cold winter months.

“The longer the door is open, the more cold air is going to come in.”

When asked why it’s important for her to be energy efficient, she answers, “I’m obsessed about green, you know, about the planet. I’m not going to save the planet, I myself am not going to do it. But if we make a group effort, we can make contributions for the generations to come.”

The Con Edison energy efficiency team comes to help and explains the benefits of smart thermostats, “These are really great because, not only are they web connected through your smartphone app, you can really help manage your heating and set it to a lower degree and it even adapts to the behavior of your house.

Heat pumps can be a great way to save money too. Not only for air conditioning but also heating. They can run more efficiently than your typing AC or Heating Unit.

Other things that can help preserve energy are using LED lights, making sure not to block heating vents, and making sure your hot-water pipes are insulated.
