This video shows a simple somatic technique to reset a dysregulated nervous system.
Peripheral activation is a technique that signals to your brain that it's safe. Use hand size props such as massage, tennis or pool ball or apples, tomatoes, potatoes or eggs.
Instructions
1) Peripheral Vision Activation: By focusing on objects at the edge of your visual field, you reduce the need for the intense, focused gaze associated with the sympathetic nervous system's stress response. This relaxed gaze helps signal to your brain that it's safe to switch to the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)
2) Facial Muscle Relaxation: Softening the muscles in your face can reduce the physical tension that often accompanies stress. The facial muscles are directly connected to the vagus nerve, a critical component of the PNS Relaxing these muscles can stimulate the vagus nerve, enhancing the PNS's calming effects.
3) Deep Breathing: Taking deep breaths activates the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain to the abdomen and plays a crucial role in the PNS. Deep breathing can lower heart rate and blood pressure, promoting a state of calm and relaxation.
4) Repeated Movement and Focus: Moving the props while maintaining a relaxed gaze and breathing pattern helps reinforce the activation of the PNS. Repetition helps condition your nervous system to respond more readily to these calming signals over time.
