Making allusions to the titular substance of his later novel The Futurological Congress in 1971, this story explores the diary of an 18th-century Portuguese traveler through the eyes of the American Secretary of State as he awaits the start of a conference. The story's structure was obviously inspired by the classic 1805 novel The Manuscript Found at Saragossa by Jan Potocki, a fellow Polish author.
Originally published in a collection of the author's stories entitled Sesame and Other Stories in 1954, which was reproduced the following year simply as Sesame.
