Alive but 'Dead' in Aadhaar records, Odisha farmer suffers

Описание: A serious digital error in a welfare-linked system deprived a farmer from Odisha of selling his harvested paddy after his Aadhaar record wrongly showed him as deceased. The incident involved Tankadhar Giri of Pipilipali village under Bijepur block, who faced trouble at the procurement centre due to an Aadhaar mismatch. Officials and the farmer said Giri brought 28.86 quintals of paddy to Budapali mandi against token number 296160. However, the procurement process failed during the iris scan as the system flagged his Aadhaar as inactive.

Giri stated that he is alive and possesses all valid documents, but the Aadhaar database continued to show him as deceased. He alleged that no alternative arrangement was provided and the token validity expired January 3, adding to his financial and mental distress. After verification at the Bijepur Aadhaar centre, officials informed him that the Aadhaar was deactivated due to a deceased status entry and advised him to visit Bhubaneswar. He later submitted documents to the District Collector and the Aadhaar centre in Bhubaneswar. As the issue remained unresolved, he was forced to take the paddy back home. Adviser Ramesh Mohapatra of the Sanjukta Krushak Sangathan said the case exposed technical flaws in the procurement system and warned of agitation if corrective steps are not taken.
