PHARMACIST Fi looks at the fascinating range of ways medicine interactions with Paxlovid happen, and active ingredients of interacting medicines which are currently listed in the latest Australian Paxlovid product information (PI), U.S.A. prescribing information (USPI), and U.K. summary of product characteristics (SmPC) on 13 February 2023
(health professionals may wish to use the free University of Liverpool COVID-19 Drug Interactions Checker, or other similarly high quality medicine interactions guidance, to find a wider range of active ingredients which interact with Paxlovid than this video contains, as well as checking the latest local Paxlovid medicine information for health professionals in your country; please note that this video is only for education and is not medical advice).
PHARMACIST Fi's main reasons for making this video are to let viewers know that:
*Paxlovid interacts in different ways with different medicines
*interaction management may be very different for different medicines or different people,
for example:
whether Paxlovid can be taken or not,
whether medicine changes are needed or not,
type of medicine changes (if required),
extent of medicine changes (if required),
start and stop dates of medicine changes (if required) relative to start and stop dates of Paxlovid treatment,
whether increased monitoring for side effects or medical condition symptoms is needed,
type/s, frequency and location of increased monitoring (if required)
Paxlovid medicine interaction management partly depends on what medical conditions a person has and their kidney and liver function (these things may influence whether medicine changes can be made safely or not, or whether Paxlovid may need to be avoided for some people)
*ways to manage Paxlovid medicine interactions may change in the coming months or years due to new research (for example: the Australian Paxlovid product information for health professionals has been updated with changes twice in the past 2 months) - so it is VERY important that the doctor (or pharmacist or nurse in some countries) who is considering whether or not to prescribe Paxlovid checks the most recent medicine interaction management advice for each medicine or herb their patient is currently taking and has taken in recent weeks
*Not every medicine interacts with Paxlovid, and although some medicines interact with Paxlovid in ways that are dangerous enough that Paxlovid must not be taken by some people, some moderate medicine interactions with Paxlovid can be managed by medicine changes in some people (depending on what medical conditions they have, and their kidney and liver function), and some other medicine interactions with Paxlovid are mild enough not to need medicine changes... so a lot of people are able to take Paxlovid to help reduce risk of hospitalization or death from COVID-19 infection.
