Every printer will need an accurate page count to provide an accurate quote. Here's a simple tutorial to calculate the page count of a hardcover book or journal with smyth sewn binding.
The key when counting the number of pages is to remember that:
1. Each sheet of paper is counted as ONE PAGE.
2. You DO NOT include covers or end sheets in your page count.
What's an end sheet? An end sheet is a thicker sheet of paper, either glued to the inside front and back cover, or found between your inside front cover and first page, and inside back cover and last page.
Even though end sheets are placed within the book, they are not considered part of your page count. While end sheets can be printed on, the purpose is to add structure to the book/journal.
Here’s how to calculate your page count…
PAGE 1 will always start on the right-hand side of the front end sheet (the loose leaf, in other words - the one not glued to the inside front cover).
Since each side of a sheet of paper is counted as ONE PAGE this means that PAGE 2 will be the reverse side of PAGE 1.
Next is PAGE 3. With the reverse of PAGE 3 being PAGE 4 and so on…
The LAST interior page of the journal or book will always land on the left hand side.
A few other pointers to be aware of:
1. The page count of hardcover smyth sewn journals and books needs to be divisible by 4.
2. There is not really a page max BUT you will need enough pages to create a volume thick enough to accommodate a spine.
3. Typically smyth sewn journals are about 100 to 300 pages.
Make sense?
