On 13 July 1971, three days after an attempted coup saw rebels attack the King's summer palace at Skhirat, King Hassan II of Morocco attended a funeral ceremony held for soldiers of the King's Royal Guard who had died defending the monarch. In the city of Rabat, ITN's Robert Southgate observed King Hassan as he participated in the ceremony. The 1971 Moroccan coup attempt would be the first of two coup attempts to take place during Hassan II's reign, the second occuring just over a year later, on 16 August 1972.
