On 3 March 1971, ITN's Sandy Gall reported from the Northern Irish border on the British Army's attempts to deter, detect, and detain gun runners of the Official Irish Republican Army (OIRA). Joining the Royal Lancers on patrol, Gall observed how the expansive and pourous border between the Republic of Ireland and its northern neighbour made the task of preventing gun smugglers almost impossible. And so it was that a comparitively tiny force of IRA militiamen was able to keep 7,000 soldiers of the British Army – and the whole of Northern Ireland – on a "knife edge".
