STORYLINE:
The Israeli army is continuing its military operation around the West Bank city of Jenin - scene of the deadliest fighting in Israel's 13-day-old offensive.
Tanks, backed by APCs and hundreds of crack troops, ring the city sealing off the area from all comers and preventing those inside from leaving.
Israeli attack helicopters fly overhead.
More than 100 Palestinians are believed to have been killed in the Jenin camp, and many bodies are said to be still lying in the streets.
Among those reported dead was Mahmoud Tawalbeh, a leader of the militant Islamic Jihad group. Tawalbeh, 23, has masterminded a number of suicide bombings in Israel.
In the nearby town of Rummana hundreds of detainees milled around on Wednesday
The men held here were arrested during the operation as Israeli forces swept through the northern West Bank.
They came from Jenin, Tulkarem, Qaliqilya and adjoining villages.
Some have been held for days and allege torture and brutality from Israeli Defence Force (IDF) soldiers.
The IDF strenuously deny such claims.
