Before September 1977, the Turners were just moonshiners.
Four generations of men who'd been cooking whiskey in the hollows of the Ozark Mountains since before Prohibition made it profitable. They weren't criminals in their own eyes. They were craftsmen. Farmers who'd found a way to turn corn into something worth more than corn, the same way their grandfathers had, the same way their great-grandfathers had before that.
The still was their inheritance. Copper and oak and the knowledge of how to make liquor that didn't blind you or kill you, passed down like a family Bible, worth more than the land it sat on.
Then the Eldridge crew came. City men with guns and ambition, looking to take over the mountain trade. They didn't ask permission. Didn't offer partnership. Just came in the night and took the still that four generations of Turners had built and rebuilt and perfected.
They thought the Turners would fold. Thought old men and farmers wouldn't fight back against professionals. Thought taking a man's livelihood was just business, nothing personal.
They were wrong about all of it.
