Nathan Crowell has been an insurance claims investigator for twenty-three years. He's handled everything—house fires, car wrecks, crop failures, the routine disasters that punctuate rural American life. But the file on his desk is unlike anything he's ever seen.
A property policy, opened in 1974, for a farm outside Cherokee. Premium payments have continued without interruption for forty-four years—$847 annually, adjusted for inflation, always paid in cash, always on time. The property itself has been abandoned since 1975. No living owner has ever been identified.
Someone has been paying to insure a ghost.
Nathan drives to the property expecting to find an empty field, maybe a collapsed barn. Instead, he finds a farmhouse frozen in time, a equipment shed still containing rusted machinery, and a grain silo that has been sealed with welding that looks decades old.
Inside the silo, behind a false panel that takes him three hours to discover, Nathan finds a metal box containing documents that will unravel a mystery forty-four years in the making.
