14 equal temperament feels like the scale of an ancient civilization from a long lost alien planet, expanding on the sound of the 7edo scales of many traditional cultures across the world with the addition of many interesting and strange sounding intervals. So I made this rhythmic atmospheric track, almost entirely in one sitting yesterday afternoon, to try to capture some of what the relatively unexplored (compared to 'better' edos) 14edo has to offer. This is my first time using this scale, and I just made the track organically as I went, so let me know what you think! The album version will be a bit more developed.
On paper, 14edo looks pretty bad. It's a no fives system, so there isn't really any meaningful reference to any ratio involving the fifth harmonic (including minor and major thirds and sixths). The addition of two extra notes to 12edo essentially squashes all of the notes towards the tritone, making the fifth a bit flat (-16c, but still nice enough), the fourth equally sharp, and completely replacing the thirds and sixths with their subminor (7/6 and 11/7), neutral (11/9 and 13/8) and supermajor (9/7 and 12/7) equivalents (note the ratios in brackets are not the only interpretations of these intervals, 14edo tempers a lot so I just chose the simplest ones that were close). For its size though, it has surprisingly nice subminor, neutral, and supermajor chords, which can function in chord progressions that range from pretty and ethereal to gritty and unforgiving. It sounds a lot more xen than the usual tunings I use, and the style of the track definitely reflects that.
This gives the tuning a true bizarreness, with dark and powerful subminor chords, gentle and neutral chords and bright and manic supermajor chords, which resolve in completely different ways to diatonic chords allowing for modulations all over the place without ever feeling too atonal in my opinion.
I found that 14edo is so far from 12edo that none of the intervals ever feel 'out of tune' compared to 12edo, allowing the xenharmonic sound to just be itself!
