With this episode we begin a dedicated study of another powerful problem-solving approach known as "Divide And Conquer".
Even thought the description of this approach is short and sweet, 1) divide; 2) solve; 3) combine, that approache punches above its weight and travels far and wide not only throughout mathematics but throughout theoretical physics and computer science as well.
As usual, we begin the study of the new material with straightforward examples and then, once we understand what is going on, we gradually crank up the perceived level of difficulty of the consequent challenges.
In this episode, kicking the tires of the new problem-solving approach, we cut an 8x3 rectangle into 2 pieces that, when combined, cover a 12x2 hole.
In the process we learn about the Wallace-Bolyai-Gerwien Theorem and about the Hilbert's Third Problem.
