Twelve hours a day. Seven days a week. Three hundred and sixty-four days a year. One day off — the Fourth of July.
That was the Carnegie Steel work schedule in 1907. And every two weeks, the men didn't rotate shifts. They worked straight through for twenty-four hours and came out the other side.
This is what life actually looked like inside a Pittsburgh steel mill — the heat, the noise, the wages that didn't cover the rent, and what it all accumulated into across a man's working life.
